Luke Humphries Wins World Darts Championship Final
Humphries, the world number one, extended his unbeaten run to 19 games and secured his first world title with a 7-4 victory. Littler had become an overnight sensation, beating former world champions to reach the final in his first appearance in the competition.
Despite losing the opening set, Littler fought back to level the match with a sublime 120 finish. However, Humphries proved too strong for the teenager, winning five sets to seal the win.
Littler had shown incredible form throughout the competition, having only played four senior PDC matches before his World Championship debut. He began his run with a first-round win over Christian Kist on 20 December before sending UK Open champion Andrew Gilding packing just before Christmas. After beating Matt Campbell, Littler produced a sensational performance to beat five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld to reach the last 16. He then demolished Brendan Dolan to reach the final four, holding his nerve after losing the opening set to beat Rob Cross on Tuesday night.
Despite his defeat in the final, Littler made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Darts Championship finalist. His debut campaign ended in disappointment, but the talented teenager will have plenty more huge nights ahead.
On the other hand, Humphries proved why he is the world’s number one with his incredible resolve and comeback. He had climbed to the top of the rankings with a demolition job on Scott Williams in Tuesday’s semi-final, and his win over Littler extended his unbeaten run to 19 games. The 28-year-old was tested throughout the competition, but he proved to be a test too far for Littler in the final.
The final was a thrilling contest, absorbing drama until the end. Littler fought hard, but Humphries was too strong, winning five sets on the bounce to secure the win. The world number one was mauled in the sixth set as Littler opened up a two-set lead, but Humphries responded with a stunning 170 maximum finish to keep the contest alive. He made it three consecutive sets to take a 5-4 lead before drawing applause from Littler with his exquisite finish to level the match again. However, Humphries emerged victorious, sealing a 7-4 victory and his first world title.
