Bernard Hill, the iconic actor renowned for his roles in Titanic, Lord of the Rings, and Boys from the Blackstuff, has passed away at the age of 79.
The BBC reported his death just hours before the release of his latest project, season 2 of the BBC drama The Responder starring Martin Freeman.
Singer and actress Barbara Dickson was among the first to pay tribute, expressing her sadness and recalling their work together on John Paul George Ringo and Bert, a remarkable show from 1974-1975.
The BBC also acknowledged Hill as an extraordinary talent, with Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, highlighting his impactful contributions across various iconic roles.

Bernard Hill’s agent, Lou Coulson, confirmed his passing in the early hours of Sunday morning, and a statement from his family is expected soon.
Devastated fans and colleagues have taken to social media to honor Hill’s legacy and unforgettable performances throughout his career. His portrayal of Yosser Hughes in Boys from the Blackstuff was particularly celebrated for its depth and impact on British television.
Dominic Monaghan, Hill’s co-star from The Lord of the Rings, paid tribute to the actor’s memorable portrayal of King Theoden in the trilogy.
Many fans also noted Hill’s unique achievement as the only actor to appear in two films that each won 11 Oscars – The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Titanic.

Born in Manchester in 1944, Hill’s acting journey began after graduating from the Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama. His career spanned notable films such as Gandhi, The Bounty, and Titanic, where he portrayed Captain Edward John Smith.
His role as King Théoden in The Lord of the Rings trilogy further solidified his place in cinema history.
