Labour MP Mike Amesbury Suspended After Punching Man in Cheshire Incident
Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended following the release of CCTV footage that appears to show him violently assaulting a constituent in Cheshire.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, allegedly captures Amesbury sucker-punching a man during a conversation before hitting him repeatedly while he was on the ground.
The footage shows Amesbury throwing a punch without any apparent provocation, causing the victim to fall into a car park. Following the incident, the Labour Party announced Amesbury’s suspension pending an investigation. A spokesperson for the party confirmed that Amesbury has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries.
In a statement on social media, Amesbury claimed he felt threatened during the confrontation, stating, “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.”
He expressed his commitment to cooperating with police investigations while maintaining his dedication to serving the constituents of Runcorn and Helsby.
Cheshire Police reported that they had “voluntarily interviewed” a 55-year-old man regarding the incident, who has since been released pending further inquiries. The police were called to the scene at approximately 2:48 a.m. on October 26 following reports of an assault.
Labour Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson remarked that the incident is a police matter and noted Amesbury’s cooperation with authorities. Meanwhile, the Conservative Party called for Amesbury to answer questions about his actions, and Reform UK has urged him to resign to allow for a by-election in his constituency.
Amesbury previously garnered 22,358 votes in the last general election, while Reform UK received 7,662 votes in the Runcorn and Helsby constituency.
