The Kremlin has stated that reaching a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine is not currently feasible, as Russia continues its military operations.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed remarks from former US President Donald Trump, who expressed disappointment in Russian President Vladimir Putin following a recent phone call between the two leaders.

“Naturally, we pay close attention to all statements made by President Trump,” Peskov said.
He explained that during the conversation, President Putin reiterated Russia’s official position that it prefers to achieve its objectives in Ukraine through political and diplomatic means. However, Peskov claimed that, at present, such an outcome is not achievable.

“Since that does not appear possible at this stage, we are continuing our special military operation,” he added, using the Kremlin’s term for the invasion of Ukraine.
Peskov also stated that Putin informed Trump that Russia is still waiting for Ukraine to confirm the dates for a third round of direct negotiations.

When asked about the possibility of a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin this summer, Peskov said such a meeting is “needed,” but insisted it would have to be “well-prepared” in advance to be meaningful.

The Kremlin’s latest comments come amid sustained international efforts to mediate an end to the war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Despite various rounds of negotiations, including those facilitated by global intermediaries, no comprehensive peace deal has been reached.
Trump has repeatedly suggested he could help broker a resolution to the war if re-elected, but no formal plans for direct talks with Putin have been confirmed.
