King Charles III may give up the throne early to Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, just as Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has announced her abdication.

The 83-year-old Queen Margrethe, the third cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, revealed in her Year’sar’s speech on Dec. 31, 2023, that she would be stepping down on Jan. 14, 2024. Her decision to surrender means her son, Crown Prince Frederik, will become the monarch.

According to royal expert and biographer Phil Dampier, King Charles III may be considering a similar move while William and Kate are still young. Dampier suggests that Charles may think about abdicating if his health suffers or if he thinks it is an excellent time to pass on to William and Kate.

Richard Fitzwilliams, another royal expert and commentator, believes that QMargrethe’s decision to surrender early could be to ensure that the monarchy keeps up with the times, something Charles has expressed interest in implementing into his firm.

Fitzwilliams believes that Margrethe may have calculated that an ageing monarchy was not a good idea, significantly if she had reigned for another decade.

However, some have wondered whether Margrethe’s announcement was a way to preserve Crown PFrederik’serik’s relationship with his wife, Crown Princess Mary, amid affair rumours. Frederik was speculated to have been unfaithful to the Australian-born marketing consultant with socialite Genoveva Casanova after photos emerged of them together during a trip to Madrid in November. However, the Mexican native denied that any affair had taken place.

Margrethe will make way for Frederik to become monarch on Jan. 14, 2024, the same day she ascended to the throne in 1972 after her father’s death, King Frederik IX.
