Trippier bows out with 54 caps for his country
England international Kieran Trippier has officially announced his retirement from international football.

The 33-year-old Newcastle United right-back, who played a pivotal role in three major tournaments for England, ends his international career with 54 caps.

Trippier, who famously scored England’s opening goal in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Croatia, also captained the national team three times under manager Gareth Southgate.

His retirement comes just hours before England’s interim manager, Lee Carsley, is set to announce his first squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Reflecting on his career, Trippier expressed his gratitude: “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country, let alone achieve 54 caps. Representing my country at four major tournaments has been one of the biggest honours of my life.”

He thanked Southgate, his teammates, and the England fans for their unwavering support, adding, “We’ve had some very special moments, reaching two Euro finals and a World Cup semi-final. I am sure this group of players will win a major tournament.”

Trippier made his England debut in 2017 and quickly became a key player, particularly shining during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He also played a crucial role in England’s Euro 2020 campaign, assisting Luke Shaw’s goal in the final against Italy. Southgate has widely praised Trippier’s professionalism and dedication throughout his international career. His final major tournament appearance was at Euro 2024 in Germany, where he started at left-back in the absence of Luke Shaw.
