Washington / Tel Aviv / Tehran — The United States and Israel have claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed in a large-scale joint military operation on Saturday, though Iranian authorities have not officially confirmed the reports.
US President Donald Trump said the strikes — described by American officials as a coordinated effort with Israel targeted senior Iranian regime and security figures.
In a statement posted on social media, Trump declared that Khamenei was dead and described the operation as a decisive move against what he called imminent threats from the Iranian regime.

He framed the attack as both a national security measure and what he described as an opportunity for the Iranian people to reclaim political control. Fox news reports
Israeli officials speaking to US media outlets said dozens of high-ranking Iranian military and security officials were targeted in the opening phase of the operation. They claimed multiple senior figures were killed, including those present at a fortified compound believed to be used by Khamenei.

A senior Israeli official told Reuters that a body believed to be Khamenei’s had been recovered, though no independent verification has yet been provided.
Iranian state media has not confirmed his death, and there has been no televised address from senior Iranian leadership at the time of publication.
Escalation After Months of Tension
The strikes follow weeks of escalating tension between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Trump had repeatedly warned that failure to reach an agreement would result in “serious consequences.”
In an address announcing the operation, Trump said the objective was to “defend the American people” by eliminating what he described as immediate threats posed by Iran’s leadership and military apparatus.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a national address that there were “many indications” Khamenei had been killed, but stopped short of providing definitive proof.
The operation reportedly follows a substantial US military build-up in the Middle East in recent weeks, including naval deployments and repositioning of air assets.
Uncertainty Inside Iran
There has been no official confirmation from Tehran regarding Khamenei’s status. Iranian state media has not broadcast images or statements addressing the claim directly.
Khamenei, 86, has served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989 following the death of Ruhollah Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic. As Supreme Leader, he has held ultimate authority over Iran’s military, judiciary and state broadcasting, as well as significant influence over foreign and nuclear policy.
Any confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader particularly as a result of foreign military action would represent an unprecedented escalation in regional conflict and could trigger severe retaliatory measures.

Global Reaction Expected
International leaders have yet to formally respond. Analysts warn that confirmation of Khamenei’s death could destabilise the region, disrupt global energy markets and potentially draw in additional actors.
Security experts also caution that misinformation is common in the early hours of major military operations, and independent verification will be critical.
At the time of writing, there is no confirmation from the United Nations, European Union, or major international intelligence agencies regarding Khamenei’s status.
This remains a developing story.
