US President Donald Trump has ordered an end to Secret Service protection for former Vice President and Democratic rival Kamala Harris.
Senior aides have confirmed that the extended security detail for former Vice President Kamala Harris, which had remained in place since she left office earlier this year, has now been scaled back.
Kirsten Allen, a senior adviser to Ms. Harris, confirmed the decision and commended federal agents, saying the vice president “is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety.”
Under longstanding protocol, former vice presidents typically receive six months of Secret Service coverage once their term ends. Harris, however, had been granted an extended period of protection lasting 18 months.
The extension was initially approved by then-President Joe Biden, who authorised one year of coverage through January 2026.
According to officials, Mr Biden later signed an executive memorandum in January that pushed Harris’s security detail even further, providing her with 18 months of federal protection.
Former US presidents automatically receive lifetime Secret Service coverage. By contrast, vice presidents are entitled to only a limited post-office period unless the sitting president extends their security arrangements.
Trump’s order to revoke Harris’s protection effectively overrides Biden’s earlier decision, leaving her without federal agents less than a year after leaving office.
The White House has not commented publicly on the rationale behind the move. Critics argue it strips away an important layer of security from a high-profile figure who has remained active in national politics.
This is not the first time President Trump has withdrawn government security from former officials. Earlier this month, he ended Secret Service protection for former national security adviser John Bolton, whose Maryland home was raided by FBI agents days later.
In March, Trump also moved to remove federal protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, the children of his predecessor.
Despite stepping back from the frontline office, Harris has kept her political profile high. She ruled out a run for governor of California in 2026 but has not closed the door on a presidential campaign in 2028.
Her advisers say she continues to engage with Democratic donors and grassroots organisations, fuelling speculation she could re-emerge on the national stage in the years ahead.
