Former President Donald Trump’s request for a mistrial during the Manhattan hush money trial, based on Stormy Daniels’ testimony, was denied by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan on Thursday.

The judge’s ruling came after a courtroom dispute over the credibility of Daniels’ claims about her alleged sexual encounter with Trump and the subsequent hush money payments. This was a crucial moment in the trial.

Judge Merchan said that Trump's lawyers opened the door for Stormy Daniels to "corroborate" her testimony about the affair.

Trump’s legal team, led by attorney Todd Blanche, had sought a mistrial arguing that Daniels’ explicit testimony unfairly portrayed Trump as a perpetrator of assault due to her descriptions of an “imbalance of power,” absence of condom use, and the presence of Trump’s bodyguard during the encounter.

During the proceedings, Judge Merchan criticized Trump’s lawyers for inadvertently allowing details of Daniels’ testimony to go unchallenged, including references to a condom. He expressed surprise at the lack of objections that Trump’s legal team raised, questioning their strategic decisions in handling the trial.

The courtroom exchange highlighted the broader legal strategy at play, with Trump’s attorneys attempting to challenge Daniels’ narrative while prosecutors sought to uphold her credibility. Judge Merchan’s denial of Trump’s mistrial request underscored the complexities of the trial and the need for thorough legal arguments to sway the court’s decisions.

In addition to the mistrial request, Trump’s legal team had also sought permission to publicly criticize Daniels, a move that the judge rejected, citing concerns about potential witness intimidation. This decision further underscored the judge’s efforts to maintain a fair and impartial trial environment.

Despite the legal setbacks for Trump’s defence, the trial is set to resume on Friday at 9:30 a.m.; signalling continued legal proceedings focused on unravelling the intricacies of the hush money payments and the alleged encounters involving Trump and women like Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal.

The trial’s ongoing developments reflect the broader legal challenges faced by Trump post-presidency, highlighting the complexities of legal battles intertwined with political and personal controversies.
