Former Tottenham Hotspur owner Joe Lewis is set to receive an official pardon from US President Donald Trump, ending the legal chapter that followed his £4m fine for insider trading.
The 88-year-old billionaire will not be returning to Tottenham, having transferred ownership to the Lewis Family Trust in 2022.
Lewis family now controls day-to-day operations at Tottenham, with Joe’s daughter Vivienne, his son Charles, and Nick Beucher, Vivienne’s son-in-law, taking leadership roles. They are supported by non-executive chairman Peter Charrington and chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, while Eric Hinson recently joined the board as a non-executive director.
The pardon is expected to be officially published by the White House later on Thursday as reported by the Telegraph
Joe Lewis said he is pleased to have closure on the matter and looks forward to retirement while observing his family’s continued work in building and expanding their businesses.
A source close to the family said: “Joe and the Lewis family are extremely grateful for this pardon and would like to thank President Trump. Joe has been a visionary throughout his career, and his legacy goes far beyond this one event.”
Lewis Family Leadership and Club Investment
Vivienne Lewis has been attending matches regularly since former chairman Daniel Levy left, and the family recently injected £100m into the club, signalling a commitment to sustained sporting success. Tottenham currently sits fifth in the Premier League table and 10th in the Champions League.
The Lewis Family Trust has stressed that Tottenham’s future will focus on quality management and sporting achievements, with operational decisions firmly in the hands of the next generation. Joe Lewis will remain in retirement, enjoying his time while supporting the family’s broader business interests.
Born in London’s East End, Lewis was ranked 39th on the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, with an estimated fortune of around £5bn. In April last year, before his sentencing, he reflected on his upbringing during World War II, saying it taught him how “precious life is” and inspired his commitment to finding cures for serious diseases.
Since returning to the White House, Donald Trump has issued several pardons, some of which have provoked controversy and media attention. The pardon for Lewis appears largely procedural, closing the legal chapter on his insider trading case.
The family’s statement reinforced their long-term vision, emphasising a focus on excellence across all their business and sporting ventures. “There is so much more to the Joe Lewis story than this one event,” the source added.
This pardon marks the end of a significant legal matter for the billionaire while reaffirming that Tottenham Hotspur will continue under the stewardship of his family.
