President Joe Biden’s final appearance at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) was marred by an unceremonious late-night slot, airing at 11:28 p.m. when old sitcoms typically fill the airwaves.
This timing was strategic, as the convention’s first night was dubbed “losers night,” featuring Biden, Hillary Clinton, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and prominent figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The convention organizers deliberately scheduled a lengthy roster of speakers before Biden, ensuring his speech would reach as few viewers as possible. The address was framed as a tribute to Biden’s presidential accomplishments—some genuine, others exaggerated—but the nominee himself was somewhat of an afterthought. Biden’s speech highlighted Kamala Harris primarily as a supportive partner rather than acknowledging her achievements.
Biden’s attempt to revive past themes appeared lacklustre. He referenced Charlottesville and accused former President Trump of emboldening hate groups and anti-Semites. “Hate has no safe harbour” in America, Biden declared. However, critics argue that his administration has not effectively addressed anti-Semitism on college campuses, which he referenced with a controversial comment about pro-Hamas protesters having a valid point.
The speech also featured Biden’s strong criticisms of Trump, labelling him a “loser,” “liar,” “felon,” and “sucker.” Despite promising unity, Biden’s remarks were marred by criticisms contradicting recent Democratic pledges to avoid name-calling.
Biden’s speech included claims that the Biden-Harris administration had successfully reopened schools post-COVID, despite evidence suggesting that their approach often conflicted with scientific recommendations, favouring teachers’ unions over timely school reopenings.
Throughout the address, Biden attempted to maintain unity and positivity. Nancy Pelosi, a prominent Democratic figure, was seen holding a “We Love Joe” sign from the front row, even though she had previously pushed Biden out of the spotlight. Biden’s performance was characterized by reliance on a prepared script, contributing to a strained and resentful tone.
As the speech concluded, Biden’s demeanour and the overall reception highlighted why some Democrats might be pushing for a change in leadership. The delayed and tepid reception underscored the party’s internal challenges and growing dissatisfaction with Biden’s presidency.
