President Joe Biden revealed on Monday that his White House aides often tell him he “can’t” do things he wants to do, but he intends to act anyway.
This admission was made during an event in the East Room honouring Gotham FC, the 2023 National Women’s Soccer League champions +n on stage, Biden remarked, “You know, I thought when I got to be president, I’d get to do things I want.
But my staff tells me what I can’t do.” He then invited several elementary—and middle-school-aged girls to join him, shaking their hands and asking them for their names.
While Biden’s comments about staff restrictions drew attention, he did not elaborate on why such interactions are discouraged.
In the past, Republicans have circulated footage of Biden that some believe portrays him as overly familiar with both children and adult women, leading to the nickname “Creepy Joe.” After multiple women accused him of inappropriate contact, Biden pledged in April 2019 to be “more mindful about respecting personal space.”
Since assuming the presidency, Biden has notably reduced the number of awkward moments captured on video compared to his time as vice president under Barack Obama.
As he prepares to travel to New York City for the United Nations General Assembly’s annual meetings, Biden has shown signs of increased freedom in his public engagements.
Despite assurances that he would finish his term strongly, critics note that he has spent considerable time on vacation. During a recent cabinet meeting, First Lady Jill Biden spoke more than he did.
