President Biden confidently claimed he is more physically capable of handling the presidency than anyone else. He even joked that he could take on reporters questioning his age.

In an interview with Time magazine at the White House last month, published on Tuesday, Biden responded to questions about his ability to serve as an 85-year-old president, a concern many Americans have if he wins a second term.

“I can do it better than anybody you know. You’re looking at me, I can take you too,” Biden told Time’s Washington bureau chief Massimo Calabresi and editor-in-chief Sam Jacobs.

Biden, seemingly in jest, emphasized he never considered not running due to his age and addressed Americans’ worries directly.

“Watch me. Look, name me a president that’s accomplished as much in the first three and a half years. When all of you at Time magazine said I couldn’t get anything done, I delivered a trillion-plus dollar infrastructure bill, $368 billion for environmental initiatives, and more,” Biden asserted.

He highlighted his administration’s achievements, including significant private-sector investments. “I remember heading to South Korea to reclaim the chips industry, which resulted in $865 billion in private-sector investments since I’ve been in office,” he said. “Name me a president who’s done that.”

Time fact-checked this statement, clarifying that the White House announced an $866 billion private-sector investment in May, not during Biden’s 2022 South Korea trip. This funding spans clean energy and manufacturing industries, not just the chips industry.

Concerns about Biden’s age and mental sharpness have persisted throughout his presidency. These concerns intensified following Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report earlier this year on Biden’s possession of classified documents. The report noted Biden’s inability to recall key details about his vice presidency and the year his son Beau died, but concluded no charges should be brought against Biden due to his perceived sympathetic and well-meaning nature as an elderly man with a poor memory.

At 82 in November, Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history. His likely general election opponent, former President Trump, will turn 78 later this month.
