Jessica Simpson recently addressed a social media critic who suggested she should stop drinking, even though she has been sober for nearly seven years.
On Monday, the former reality TV star shared a black-and-white photo of her 11-year-old son, Ace, on Instagram. A commenter with the handle @nunyabusiness1492 wrote, “STOP DRINKING!” seemingly out of context.
Simpson, 44, promptly corrected the commenter, writing, “I haven’t wanted or touched alcohol since October 2017, and it has been the best decision I’ve made for myself and my family.” She added, “Thank you for the concern, but you misunderstood me. Sending love your way.”
In response to Simpson’s clarification, the commenter quickly apologized, saying, “I’m so happy to hear that!! Sorry for my misunderstanding. Sending love to you as well.”
Last year, Simpson celebrated six years of sobriety with a powerful post, sharing an “unrecognizable” photo from a time when she was at her lowest.
She reflected on her journey in the caption, saying, “I had so much self-discovery to unlock and explore. I knew in this very moment I would allow myself to take back my light, show victory over my internal battle of self-respect, and brave this world with piercing clarity.”
She explained that her decision to quit drinking was driven by a desire to overcome exhaustion and find inner peace rather than just addressing alcohol use. Simpson emphasized, “I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honour,” and aimed to lead a life of self-respect and forward progress.
In her 2020 memoir, *Open Book*, Simpson detailed how her struggles with alcohol and pills began during her relationship with John Mayer in 2007.
She attributed her dependence to feelings of insecurity and fear of disappointing him. “I was so afraid of disappointing him that I couldn’t even text him without having someone check my grammar and spelling,” she wrote.
Since then, Simpson has married Eric Johnson, and the couple has three children together.
