Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio) expressed confidence ahead of next week’s vice presidential debate against Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, asserting he does not “have to prepare that much.”
Vance explained in a Wednesday press call with The Post, “We have well-developed views on public policy, so we don’t have to prepare that much. ” He added that he would not participate in any pre-debate boot camp.
This statement contrasts sharply with reports that Walz will attend a “multiday debate camp” in rural Michigan to gear up for the CBS News-hosted debate scheduled for October 1 in New York. Vance highlighted a stark difference in their approaches, noting that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had intensive preparation sessions for their debates against former President Donald Trump. “We’re not planning to do anything similar,” he confirmed.
Vance further criticized Vice President Harris, stating, “Kamala Harris’ record is one of unadorable groceries, unaffordable housing, and Americans who are losing their jobs. ” He suggested that his team does not need to conceal its record from the public. “We just have to talk about it,” he said.
As both candidates prepare for their face-off, they engage in mock debates. Governor Walz is using Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as a stand-in for Vance. Vance is practising with Rep. Tom Emmer, the House majority whip and a fellow Minnesotan, to counter Walz’s “folksy” style.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Vance’s preparation has largely taken place at his home in Cincinnati, with assistance from his wife Usha and Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller.
