Irish evangelical Christian teacher Enoch Burke, previously jailed for defying court orders, is now facing a disciplinary hearing after allegedly verbally abusing a judge during his High Court appearance.
Burke’s outburst occurred last week during his High Court appearance, where he was initially jailed in 2022 for breaching a court injunction ordering him to stay away from Wilson Hospital School in County Westmeath.
The teacher’s suspension stemmed from his refusal to address a pupil by their preferred pronoun, leading to a disciplinary process regarding his stance on transgender issues.
However, his imprisonment resulted from his refusal to comply with the court’s directive.
During the hearing, Mr Justice Mark Sanfey offered to release Burke from prison for Easter because he refrained from visiting the school.
Burke’s refusal led to a tirade against the court, prompting Mr Justice Mark Sanfey to remove him.
Burke will now appear before Mountjoy Prison Governor Ray Murtagh for a full disciplinary hearing. According to a source within Mountjoy, if found guilty, Burke could face a reduction in prison privileges, including limitations on phone calls, visitation rights, and library access.
Despite being considered a model prisoner, Burke’s recent conduct has shifted sentiment among prison staff.
The incident has reignited debates surrounding freedom of speech, religious beliefs, and the rights of transgender individuals in educational settings.
Burke’s steadfast refusal to adhere to court orders and his vocal opposition during his High Court appearance has again thrust him into the spotlight, prompting scrutiny of his actions and beliefs.
As the disciplinary process unfolds, many are watching closely to see how it will impact Burke’s future and whether it will catalyse broader discussions on issues of personal conviction versus legal obligations.
