Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has dismissed Hamas’s conditions for a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement as “unrealistic.” Netanyahu pledged to continue Israel’s offensive against Hamas, now in its fifth month, until achieving “complete victory.”

He made these remarks following a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has been seeking a ceasefire agreement in the region. Netanyahu stated during a televised news conference that surrendering to Hamas’s demands would not lead to the release of captives and would only provoke further violence.

He emphasised Israel’s commitment to achieving victory and asserted that the operation would last for months, not years. Netanyahu also ruled out any arrangement that leaves Hamas in control of Gaza, stressing that Israel is the only power capable of ensuring long-term security.

Earlier, Blinken acknowledged the significant gap between Israel and Hamas regarding the terms of a potential agreement but expressed optimism about reaching a deal. Hamas presented a detailed three-phase plan spanning four-and-a-half months in response to a proposal involving the US, Israel, Qatar, and Egypt.

The plan includes the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, an end to the war, and measures to rebuild Gaza. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden described Hamas’s demands as excessive but affirmed the continuation of negotiations.

The ongoing conflict, the deadliest in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, has resulted in significant casualties and displacement in Gaza, with repercussions across the region. The situation remains tense as efforts to reach a ceasefire continue, with diplomatic initiatives focusing on broader post-war settlements and regional stability.

However, challenges persist, including Netanyahu’s reluctance towards Palestinian statehood and the fragile nature of the governing coalition in Israel. In Gaza, the humanitarian crisis worsens, with thousands in urgent need of evacuation and necessities.

The toll on civilians, particularly women and children, underscores the urgency for a resolution to the conflict and humanitarian assistance. Hamas’s resistance remains strong despite Israeli military actions, with ongoing concerns about the welfare of hostages and the overall humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Efforts to address these issues and achieve a lasting ceasefire continue amidst regional tensions and diplomatic manoeuvres. The international community’s involvement, particularly from the US, remains crucial in facilitating negotiations and ensuring progress towards a sustainable peace agreement.
