Israel soldier Reserve Capt. Shaul Greenglick, 26, was killed in combat with Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip. A few weeks before, he had shown off his skills on the Israeli version of “The Next Star,” a reality TV singing competition. He sang a song called “Blind Bat,” which dealt with themes of death.

People who watched Channel 12 responded well to the emotional performance, which was given in Hebrew in military garb.

Greenglick, envisioning 2023 as a year of personal growth, had pledged to continue pursuing his ambitions for his country and personal dreams. His untimely demise marks a poignant loss for the Nahal Brigade’s 931st Battalion, to which he belonged. Greenglick’s Hebrew song for The Next Star was titled Blind BatN12.

In the same battle, two other soldiers met a tragic fate: reserve Master Sgt—Maor Lavi of the Bislamach Brigade’s 450th Battalion and Capt. Shay Shamriz of the Nahal’s 931st Battalion was also Greenglick’s second cousin. Shamriz’s death carries added sorrow, as he was related to one of three Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip after escaping from Hamas.

“The Next Star,” produced by the Keshet Media Group and aired on Channel 12, is an interactive reality TV singing competition. Greenglick’s participation in the current season left a lasting impact, prompting a statement of condolences from Keshet, which plans to dedicate the next episode to his memory.
