The Israeli military has admitted to killing three Israeli hostages who were being held captive by Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

The hostages, Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka, and Alon Shamriz, had been staying in a building adjacent to the one in which they were shot by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

According to reports, the hostages had hung up a sign in Hebrew reading ‘help, three hostages’ and ‘SOS‘ using leftover food. They were holding a white flag and were shirtless when they emerged from the building, as confirmed by an Israeli military official who spoke to the BBC on condition of anonymity.

The killing of the hostages has been deemed a breach of the ‘rules of engagement’ by Israeli officials, leading to intense scrutiny of the IDF’s actions.

With the recent events in Israel and Gaza, Metro’s WhatsApp community has been providing up-to-date coverage on the situation, including the deaths of Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka, and Alon Shamriz.

The deaths have increased pressure from the families of hostages for Israel to negotiate another ceasefire, with around 120 hostages still being held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

International pressure for a truce is also mounting, with France calling for an ‘immediate and durable truce’, while the UK and Germany call for a ‘sustainable ceasefire’.

However, Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has deflected the calls and stated that ‘military pressure is necessary both for the return of the hostages and for victory’.
