Israel could be compelled to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities with long-range missiles and guided bombs as tensions between the two nations rise, experts have cautioned.

David Albright, founder of the Institute for Science and International Security, believes the time is “now” for Israel to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He highlighted that Israel is already targeting Iran’s “ring of fire” by launching ground invasions against Hezbollah in Lebanon and devastating airstrikes.

Albright emphasised that this moment presents a “unique” opportunity for Israel to attack Iran’s nuclear sites without facing severe consequences.

He warned that Iran, currently on the defensive, may attempt to fast-track its atomic program and build a bomb in a matter of months. As a result, Israel could be forced to strike before Iran accelerates its nuclear production to dangerous levels.

Fearing that Iran will soon ramp up its uranium enrichment, Albright suggested that Israel may need to act quickly to prevent Iran from creating a nuclear bomb. He warned that if Israel does not act, Iran’s Islamist regime could possess nuclear weapons, leading to a potential nuclear arms race and a severe threat to regional stability.

Kasra Aarabi, a Middle East expert, noted that Tehran’s recent missile attacks on Israel demonstrate that Iran would not hesitate to launch nuclear weapons if it had them.

He added that Iran’s nuclear facilities, such as the uranium enrichment plants at Natanz and Fordow, are now “legitimate targets” for Israeli military strikes due to the existential threat they pose.

Albright explained that Israel could use missiles, bombs, and special forces to conduct a coordinated strike on critical Iranian nuclear sites before it is too late. He noted that Israel has a “unique” window of opportunity to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities while recent conflicts weaken the country’s defences.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed that Tehran “will pay” for its recent missile attacks on Israel, which included launching 181 missiles at Israeli targets earlier this week. Netanyahu has convened with his war cabinet in a secret underground bunker to strategies a possible military response, with Israeli officials indicating that strikes on Iran’s nuclear and oil facilities could be imminent.

Some experts argue that now is the perfect time for Israel to strike Iran’s nuclear bases. Albright warned that if Israel fails to act soon, Iran could move its enriched uranium stockpiles to hidden locations, making it much more challenging to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear bomb.

Former Israeli Major Ahron Bregman stressed that the “real danger” for Israel lies in the prospect of Iran becoming a nuclear power. Bregman, who served in the Israeli military for six years, emphasised that Israel would likely consider eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat before it becomes operational.

Iranian scientists have not yet created a workable nuclear weapon, but experts believe the country could be just months away from achieving this goal. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has overseen the rapid expansion of the country’s nuclear program in recent years, accumulating significant stockpiles of enriched uranium.

Iran’s uranium stockpiles, while currently insufficient for a nuclear weapon, are rapidly growing. Albright warned that Iran could soon produce enough weapons-grade uranium to build several bombs within days, which would then take only a few months to transform into nuclear weapons capable of sparking a global conflict.

Satellite images of Iran’s Natanz nuclear site from earlier this year revealed significant construction activity at the facility, suggesting that Tehran is actively working to fortify its nuclear infrastructure. The images, obtained by the Institute for Science and International Security, show the scale of Iran’s efforts to establish a robust nuclear program.

Despite concerns from the U.S. and other international powers, Israel may feel it has no choice but to act independently. While President Joe Biden has opposed an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, former U.S. President Donald Trump has supported Israel taking decisive action. Trump has publicly urged Israel to “hit the nuclear first” and deal with the consequences later.
