Israel Announces Death of Another Senior Hezbollah Leader Amid Ongoing Bombardment of Lebanon
Israeli military operations in Lebanon have intensified, with claims of targeting dozens of Hezbollah positions and the killing of another key figure in the militant group.
This escalation follows the confirmation of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah’s death due to an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
The Israeli military announced on X that they had killed Nabil Kaouk, a senior Hezbollah leader and deputy head of the group’s central council. Kaouk was reportedly among the candidates considered to succeed Nasrallah, further underscoring the impact of the airstrike that eliminated the long-standing leader.
On the same day, Hezbollah reported the death of senior military commander Ali Karaki, who was killed in the Israeli airstrikes on Dahiyeh, the southern suburbs of Beirut. Karaki was a member of Hezbollah’s Jihad council and was previously targeted in an Israeli attempt on his life just days before.
Fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces persisted throughout the night and into the early morning, with Israeli warplanes conducting airstrikes across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. An airstrike on a house in the eastern town of Ain reportedly killed 11 people, according to Lebanon’s state news agency.
Hezbollah responded by launching a barrage of rockets, reportedly utilising the group’s medium-range Fadi-1 rockets. However, details on any potential Israeli casualties from these attacks have not yet been confirmed.
The toll from Israel’s overnight airstrikes included the deaths of four paramedics while they were operating in a medical centre in Tair Dirba, as reported by Lebanon’s national news agency. This follows a previous day’s strikes that killed 33 people and injured 195, according to the Lebanese health ministry.
In the past week, Israeli attacks have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of individuals, including children, in Lebanon. These assaults included a significant strike on a densely populated area in southern Beirut, believed to have contributed to Nasrallah’s death while also demolishing entire apartment blocks.
Iran has vowed to avenge Nasrallah’s death. At the same time, U.S. President Joe Biden remarked that the killing represented a “measure of justice for his many victims,” without addressing the civilian casualties resulting from Israel’s military actions.
Lebanon plans to observe three days of official mourning for Nasrallah starting Monday, although Hezbollah has yet to announce a date for his funeral. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called the targeting of Nasrallah an essential step toward achieving their military objectives.
In his first public remarks since the assassination, Netanyahu described Nasrallah as “the terrorist” and expressed confidence that his death would facilitate the return of displaced Israelis to their homes in the north while also exerting pressure on Hamas to release Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
However, Netanyahu cautioned that the days ahead would present “significant challenges,” warning Iran against any retaliatory strikes. He emphasised that “there is no place in Iran or the Middle East that Israel’s long arm cannot reach,” highlighting Israel’s military reach.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in more than 1,000 deaths and over 6,000 injuries in Lebanon over the past two weeks, with approximately one million people displaced, including hundreds of thousands since the death of Nasrallah. The humanitarian situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate as the conflict escalates.
