An Irishman has been shot and killed by Maltese police after allegedly murdering a woman in Birkirkara.
The suspect, identified as Edward Johnston, a former Irish soldier, is accused of fatally stabbing Nicolette Ghirxi.
On the day of the incident, Johnston reportedly pointed a gun at himself and the police when they arrived at the scene.
The Times of Malta reports that during a press conference, Police Commissioner Angela Gafa described a three-hour negotiation between Johnston and the authorities.
Johnston had initially entered the sea at St Julian’s before returning to the rocks, where he continued brandishing the weapon.
The situation escalated when Johnston pointed the gun at his head and then at the police. The officers deemed the situation life-threatening and fired, killing Johnston. It was later discovered that the weapon he was holding was a replica pistol.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has acknowledged the case and is providing consular assistance. The Irish embassy in Malta also confirmed its awareness of the situation and is prepared to offer support to Johnston’s family if contacted.
