Roscommon, Ireland- Tori Towey, a native of Roscommon, is back home in Ireland after Dubai authorities lifted a travel ban imposed on her.
Towey faced charges of attempted suicide and alcohol consumption in Dubai.
Radha Stirling, founder of the Detained in Dubai group, confirmed Towey’s return, expressing Towey’s excitement. Detained in Dubai provides confidential legal assistance for civil and criminal cases in the UAE.
Stirling mentioned that the Irish embassy escorted Towey through the airport and ensured her safe boarding onto her flight home.
Speaking with *The Journal*, Stirling shared that Towey was in high spirits during her flight and eagerly anticipated reuniting with her family.
Towey’s case was scheduled for a court hearing next week.
However, the Dáil Chamber was informed on Tuesday that Dubai authorities had barred her from leaving the country. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald highlighted Towey’s plight, noting she had been subjected to severe domestic violence.
McDonald described how Towey’s husband had destroyed her passport and that she had attempted suicide to escape the abuse.
Instead of receiving medical attention, Towey was taken to a police station, charged with attempted suicide and alcohol consumption, and detained.
Moments after Simon Harris addressed the Dáil, stating that all efforts would be made to bring Towey home, news came that the travel ban was lifted.
Harris confirmed that the embassy would ensure Towey’s safe passage to the airport and continue to monitor the case.
McDonald welcomed Towey’s return but emphasized the broader issues concerning the treatment of women in Dubai.
Towey’s aunt, Ann, expressed immense relief and thanked Mary Lou McDonald, TD Claire Kerrane, and Taoiseach Simon Harris for their support.
The Dubai Public Prosecution Office dropped the charges against Towey and her husband, closing the case. The office acknowledged the circumstances and allowed Towey to return to everyday life.
