Irish Father Jailed for 13 Years for Decades of Abuse Against Daughter Co Clare, Ireland

Patrick Honan, 69, of Lakeview, Doonbeg, Kilrush, Co Clare, Ireland, has been sentenced to eleven and a half years in prison for raping and assaulting his daughter, Noreen, for thirteen years.

Noreen, who bravely surrendered her right to privacy, described her father’s acts as terrible, claiming he had “stolen her whole youth.”

Honan’s daughter, Noreen, addressed the court with remarkable dignity, revealing the extent of her father’s abuse. She detailed how the abuse began when she was just three and a half years old and continued until she was 16.

The trial heard disturbing accounts of Honan’s repeated rape and indecent assault against his daughter, occurring predominantly at their family home in Doonbeg, Co Clare, between 1977 and 1989.

The abuse intensified as Noreen grew older, with Honan exploiting opportunities when his wife was absent.

While Honan’s defence argued for his anonymity to protect his grandchildren, Judge Lankford ruled against it, citing Noreen’s decision to waive her anonymity.

In sentencing, Judge Lankford imposed a 13-year prison term on Honan, with the final 18 months suspended. She commended Noreen for her courage and resilience throughout the legal proceedings, acknowledging the immense bravery it took for her to confront her abuser and seek justice.
