Irish Artists Call on Bambie Thug to Boycott Eurovision with Over 400 Signatures
Over 400 Irish artists and creatives, including Eurosong runner-up Erica-Cody, have signed an open letter urging Bambie Thug to boycott the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest.
Bambie Thug is set to represent Ireland with their song “Doomsday Blue” after winning RTÉ’s Late Late Show Eurosong special.
Before the contest, Erica-Cody expressed the possibility of boycotting the competition, emphasising the need for solidarity in light of geopolitical conflicts.
The exclusion of Russia from Eurovision in 2022 due to the invasion of Ukraine serves as a precedent, prompting calls for a similar response to Israel’s participation.
Erica-Cody criticised Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision, labelling it an “absolute disgrace.”
Singer and Senator Frances Black joined the voices calling for Bambie Thug to withdraw from the competition.
While acknowledging Bambie Thug’s talent, the open letter urges them to reconsider their participation in Eurovision.
Bambie Thug expressed solidarity with boycott movements, citing concerns about Israel’s involvement and highlighting the importance of competition.
The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign emphasised the significance of withdrawing from Eurovision as a stance against Israeli actions in Gaza.
Israel’s hosting of Eurovision is seen as an attempt to divert attention from alleged crimes in Gaza, according to the letter.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), responsible for organising Eurovision, has faced criticism for its decision to allow Israel’s participation.
RTÉ, Ireland’s public broadcaster, has faced pressure to withdraw from Eurovision if Israel is permitted to compete.
Despite boycott campaigns, RTÉ has maintained its commitment to the contest, emphasising its non-political nature.
The Eurovision Song Contest has become a battleground for geopolitical tensions, with artists and activists using their platforms to advocate for change.
As the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation continues, the debate over the role of music and entertainment in addressing political issues intensifies.
The outcome of these boycott efforts remains uncertain, but they highlight the power of collective action in challenging systemic injustices.
