Daniel Wiffen, the standout Irish swimmer who secured gold in the men’s 800m freestyle and bronze in the 1,500m freestyle at the Paris Olympics, expressed profound disappointment at missing the closing ceremony as Ireland’s flagbearer.
Wiffen was hospitalized with a severe illness following his participation in the 10km open-water marathon in the River Seine.
The 23-year-old athlete, who also made history as Ireland’s first competitor in the open-water marathon, could not attend the closing ceremony after experiencing a severe health issue.
He described the open-water race as challenging, citing frequent physical contact during the event. The marathon continued despite concerns about water quality, which had previously led to the postponement of the men’s triathlon due to high E. coli levels.
Thanks everyone who reached out, I’m incredibly disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to be flag bearer last night.
Yesterday I rushed to hospital as I was very unwell with a bug that I am being treated for, and am feeling better now. I hope everyone enjoys the evening…

In a statement on social media, Wiffen conveyed his regret at missing the flagbearer role. “I’m incredibly disappointed to have missed the chance to represent Ireland as flagbearer at the closing ceremony,” he said. “I was taken to the hospital due to an illness I’m currently being treated for, but I am recovering now.”
Fintan McCarthy, a double gold medalist, replaced Wiffen as the flagbearer, leading the Irish delegation alongside bronze medalist Mona McSharry at the closing event.
On his Olympic experience, Wiffen expressed gratitude to his supporters, including his family, friends, and coaches. “Achieving my childhood dream of becoming an Olympic champion has been an incredible journey,” he noted. “As I return to Ireland after the Games, I want to thank everyone for their unwavering support over the past few weeks.”
Wiffen concluded his message with a heartfelt note, “Slainte mo chairde [good health friends].”
