Ireland is improving road safety in response to a troubling increase in road fatalities. As part of these efforts, officials have announced installing additional red light cameras.

While a few cameras had been previously set up in Dublin, they remained inactive for several years. The National Transport Authority (NTA) disclosed that one such camera at Blackhall Place in Dublin had been non-operational since 2016, with two others never even installed.

Motorists caught running a red light faces consequences like three penalty points on their license and an €80 fine.

Transport Minister Eamon Ryan announced plans on Monday to deploy red light cameras as part of the government’s road safety initiatives, which are set to be implemented later this year and early next year. He emphasized including automated systems in Dublin to capture light violations and misuse of bus lanes.

These developments coincide with a meeting between Taoiseach Simon Harris, other senior government officials, and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) to address the rising road fatalities this year.

The year 2024 has already witnessed over 60 road-related deaths in Ireland, leading to demands for heightened road safety enforcement and public awareness campaigns. The focus of such campaigns typically includes curbing speeding, discouraging mobile phone usage while driving, and combating driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Implementing more red light cameras is part of a broader strategy to bolster road safety across the country, aiming to deter reckless driving behaviours and promote adherence to traffic regulations.

Experts suggest that technological advancements like automated camera systems can serve as effective deterrents against red light violations and significantly reduce road accidents.

These measures align with ongoing efforts globally to leverage technology and targeted interventions to minimize road fatalities and create safer driving environments for everyone on the road.
