Jordan became the second-largest source of international protection applications with 881 submissions, following Nigeria.
Since April, Nigeria has seen accelerated processing of its applications due to a new policy introduced by Justice Minister Helen McEntee.
This policy, aimed at expediting claims from countries with the highest application volumes, led to a 53% reduction in Nigerian applications.
McEntee explained, “In April, I extended accelerated processing to the country with the most applications in the preceding three months.
Nigeria, which was the top source at that time, saw a significant drop in applications as a result of this measure.”
Now, Jordan, which has the second-highest number of applications, will also benefit from accelerated processing.
This means that applications from Jordan will be handled more quickly, allowing those granted protection to rebuild their lives in Ireland sooner, while those not qualifying can return to their home country more promptly.
Introduced in November 2022, the accelerated processing system includes 15 ‘safe countries of origin’, applicants with protection status in other European countries, and citizens from the top two applicant countries each quarter.
The current list of ‘safe countries of origin’ comprises Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Brazil, Egypt, Georgia, India, Kosovo, Malawi, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Morocco, Serbia, and South Africa.
McEntee emphasized the importance of ongoing evaluations to adapt the accelerated processing system to changing migration trends and maintain its effectiveness.
