Iran’s foreign minister delivered a personal letter from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow today, as Tehran seeks greater backing from its key ally amid escalating tensions with Israel and the United States.
A senior Iranian source, speaking to Reuters, confirmed that the letter explicitly calls for Putin’s increased support, though the specific requests were not disclosed.
The move signals growing frustration in Tehran over what officials perceive as Moscow’s insufficient response to recent developments in the region.
Iranian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated that Tehran expects more tangible support from Russia as the situation with Israel and the U.S. deteriorates.
However, they declined to elaborate on the precise nature of the assistance being sought.
Despite being longstanding allies, recent events have strained the dynamic between Moscow and Tehran.
Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a party to the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, remains a central player in international efforts to manage Iran’s nuclear ambitions. That deal collapsed after former U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew Washington’s participation in 2018.
Putin has positioned himself as a potential mediator between Tehran and Washington, though today’s developments suggest Iran is pushing for more concrete action rather than diplomatic overtures alone.
The Kremlin has yet to comment publicly on the contents of Khamenei’s letter or whether additional support will be forthcoming.
