Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has firmly pushed back against recent calls from the UK and European Union for Tehran to “return” to nuclear talks, accusing the US and Israel of deliberately undermining diplomatic efforts.
In a pointed message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Araghchi highlighted the disruption of ongoing negotiations: “Last week, we were in negotiations with the US when Israel decided to blow up that diplomacy. This week, we held talks with the E3/EU, but the US decision to undermine that diplomacy put an end to them. What conclusion would you draw?”
The minister’s statement directly challenges UK and EU officials’ demands for Iran to reengage in talks, stating, “But how can Iran return to something it never left, let alone blew up?”
This exchange follows recent high-profile calls from Western governments urging Iran to engage in diplomatic dialogue over its nuclear program amid rising tensions after reported strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
UK cabinet minister Jonathan Reynolds told Sky News that Iran had “rejected” diplomatic overtures, signalling frustration over stalled progress.
Iran’s remarks underscore the profound mistrust and the complex geopolitical landscape complicating any path toward peaceful resolution.
The accusations of sabotage reflect Tehran’s narrative that external forces are actively disrupting negotiations to prevent de-escalation.
The UK, EU, and broader international community continue to emphasise the importance of diplomacy in resolving concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions. However, Tehran’s position suggests it views these efforts through the prism of ongoing interference and hostility.
As tensions escalate in the Middle East, the diplomatic impasse deepens, leaving the prospect of renewed negotiations uncertain. The international community remains attentive to developments, hoping for a breakthrough that avoids further conflict.
