The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a coalition of resistance groups based in France and Albania, leads this charge. They claim their forces are prepared to seize power following the collapse of Khamenei’s regime.

The NCRI’s largest faction, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), established in 1965, has a president-elect ready to assume leadership. Shahin Gobadi, the spokesperson for the PMOI, shared their bold plan for a revolution with The Sun, envisioning a free, international-facing Iran as the tightly controlled nation approaches its elections.

Gobadi emphasized that their new Iran would prioritize the separation of religion from law, gender equality, better rights for ethnic minorities, an end to capital punishment, and a halt to nuclear weapons development. He vowed that these democratic principles starkly contrast the policies of the hardline candidates currently vying for power in Iran, including frontrunner Saeed Jalili, known for his stringent stance on nuclear negotiations.

As Iran remains embroiled in regional conflicts and backs proxy groups like the Houthis, the NCRI has no official candidate in the upcoming elections, as they are branded a “terrorist organization” by the Iranian regime. Despite this, Gobadi asserted that the PMOI has a robust network within Iran, consisting of resistance units that have significantly contributed to uprisings in recent years.

Gobadi detailed their grassroots activities, which include plastering anti-regime messages, recruiting young activists, and burning images of regime leaders. These acts of defiance are part of their broader strategy to erode Khamenei’s power and galvanize public dissent.

The opposition’s resolve has grown in response to the regime’s brutal enforcement of religious laws, exemplified by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, which ignited widespread protests. Gobadi highlighted the sacrifices made by over 120,000 NCRI rebels who the regime has executed over the past 43 years.

With a defined, albeit confidential, plan for toppling the regime, Gobadi expressed confidence in an impending popular uprising. He noted that the increasing scale and intensity of recent protests indicate a groundswell of support for change, making a revolution inevitable.
