The United States and Israel have accused Iran of orchestrating an assassination attempt on Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz-Neiger, marking a dangerous expansion of tensions between Tehran and its regional adversaries.
Israeli officials said Mexican authorities intervened in time to prevent the attack. “We thank the security and law enforcement services in Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico,” Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
A senior U.S. official confirmed that the Revolutionary Guards’ elite Quds Force initiated the plot in late 2024, before it was disrupted earlier this year.
The operation allegedly involved recruiting operatives through Iran’s embassy in Venezuela a close ally led by President Nicolás Maduro, who maintains a strategic partnership with Tehran.
“The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat,” the U.S. official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. “This is just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global lethal targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them.”
Neither Iran’s mission to the United Nations nor the Mexican government have commented publicly on the allegations.
The incident follows escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran. On April 1, 2024, Israel struck Iran’s embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, killing several top officers of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iran vowed revenge, launching missiles and drones against Israel in retaliation.
A year later, Israel carried out a massive bombing campaign across Iran, killing more than 1,000 people. The U.S., Israel’s main ally, participated in targeted strikes against Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.
Iran, ruled by a clerical regime since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, remains a principal backer of Hamas — the Palestinian militant group responsible for the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. The ensuing conflict devastated Gaza and widened to include strikes in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, and Qatar.
Israeli intelligence has repeatedly accused Iran’s Quds Force of coordinating global plots against Israeli and Jewish targets. Recently, Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador after linking Tehran to arson attacks on a synagogue in Melbourne and a kosher restaurant in Sydney.
Latin America has long been a site of Middle East-linked violence. The 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires killed 85 people, with Argentina and Israel blaming Lebanese group Hezbollah, allegedly at Iran’s behest.
Despite decades of tension, Iran remains home to a small but historic Jewish population. Mexico, which recognized Israel shortly after its founding, is also home to a large Jewish community and has maintained diplomatic relations despite expressing concern over Israel’s actions in Gaza.
Mexico has supported calls for an international investigation into alleged Israeli war crimes while continuing its policy of non-intervention in foreign conflicts.
