Imane Khelif, a 25-year-old boxer from Algeria, has triumphed at the 2024 Olympics, securing a gold medal in her division with a decisive victory over China’s Yang Liu by unanimous decision on Friday.
Khelif’s performance was remarkable as she dominated the match, winning the first two rounds and capping her victory with a solid third round.
However, Khelif’s path to the podium was not without controversy. Her time in Paris was overshadowed by a dispute that began last year.
She was disqualified from the world championships, alongside Lin Yu-ting, after allegedly failing a gender verification test conducted by the International Boxing Association. Yu-ting, set to compete in a gold medal fight on Saturday, criticized the test as “false” and claimed that the process did not adhere to proper standards.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Khelif maintained a focus on her performances. Earlier in the week, she remarked that she was determined to perform well and showcase her talent, stating, “I wish to be ready and show a good standard, show my talent, because I want to entertain everyone.”
Khelif’s resilience and skill ultimately led her to Olympic gold, underscoring her ability to rise above the challenges and controversies accompanying her athletic career.
