An investigation by Special Counsel David Weiss at the U.S. Department of Justice has revealed that Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, received millions of dollars from foreign entities and individuals in exchange for his services as a lobbyist, consultant, and legal advisor.

According to court documents, these payments were made to influence U.S. government actions during Joe Biden’s tenure as Vice President.

The investigation disclosed that Hunter Biden received substantial payments from Romanian businessman Gabriel Popoviciu, identified as “G.P.” in the court filings. Popoviciu reportedly hired Biden in late 2015 to help him avoid bribery charges in Romania.

Weiss’s office revealed that Biden’s work for Popoviciu was intended to sway U.S. policy and public opinion in favour of Popoviciu’s interests.

Court documents filed Wednesday in Los Angeles federal court stated, “The defendant did receive compensation from a foreign principal to attempt to influence U.S. policy and public opinion, as alleged in the indictment, and this evidence is relevant and not unfairly prejudicial.” The filing further highlighted that Biden’s actions did not reflect a diminished capacity but rather an intent to influence public policy for financial gain.

“The evidence of what the defendant agreed to do and did do for G.P. demonstrates the defendant’s state of mind and intent during the relevant tax years charged in the indictment,” the document added.

These revelations come as Hunter Biden faces a trial on September 9 for tax evasion charges. He has pleaded not guilty to accusations of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019, a period during which he is alleged to have spent lavishly on drugs and luxury items. The charges include three felony counts and several misdemeanour counts for filing false tax returns 2018.

In a separate legal matter, Hunter Biden was convicted by a Delaware jury in June for lying about his drug use when purchasing a firearm in 2018. Sentencing for that case is still pending.

Representatives for Hunter Biden, the Department of Justice, and the White House have either declined to comment or have not responded to requests for comment. Efforts to reach Gabriel Popoviciu for comment were unsuccessful.

This investigation adds to the growing scrutiny over Hunter Biden’s business dealings and his role in his father’s political career.
