While Santorini and Mykonos are often the most sought-after destinations in Europe during the sunnier months, their popularity comes with a hefty price tag. Luckily, Greece offers plenty of other stunning islands that provide a similar experience for a fraction of the cost.

One such destination is Agistri, a small island just an hour away from Athens by ferry. Like the more famous Greek islands, Agistri boasts stunning seas, quaint towns, and unique places to enjoy delicious Greek food. However, its lesser-known status makes it an incredibly affordable option for travellers.

Travel experts at Culture Trip have ranked Agistri at the top of their list of the cheapest Greek islands to visit this year. They highlighted the island’s beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and accessibility.

“If you’re looking for a quick escape from Athens, Agistri is your best bet. They wrote that this tiny island is far more affordable than nearby Aegina, which lies only a 60-minute ferry ride from Piraeus port,” they wrote.

Visitors can stroll through Skala village, admiring the fuchsia bougainvillaea and enjoying the main road’s cafes. The island is filled with forests and hiking trails, and its beaches are perfect for snorkelling, particularly in the clear, pool-like waters of Aponisos. Staying on the island also offers a feel for laid-back island life.

Accommodation on Agistri is notably affordable. Sun Travel reports hotel rooms for two can be found for around £26 per night. Dining on the island is also budget-friendly, with meals costing around £15 per person, including a starter and main course. Even beer is reasonably priced, at approximately £2 each.

Agistri’s small size means paying for transport or car hire isn’t necessary. FerryHopper lists it among their top 10 affordable Greek holiday destinations, noting that “the distances on the island are short, so you can walk or cycle instead of renting a vehicle and save good money on transportation.”

Despite its size, Agistri offers plenty to do. Snorkelling, water sports, and visiting other nearby islands are popular activities. Sunvil recommends the island as an unsung holiday spot for 2024, saying it “packs a punch far greater than its size.”

They added, “The waters around Agistri are turquoise-hued and very clear, so perfect for snorkelling (the bay of Aponisos in the south has Caribbean-like waters).”

Agistri also offers horse riding, bike hire, sea kayaking, diving, and boat excursions, including trips to the mainland Peloponnese and fishing trips. Sunvil praises the island for its value and reasonable prices. “Friendly, laid-back, genuine and very Greek, Agistri is a secret that you will not regret discovering,” they concluded.
