Senator Eric Schmitt has formally urged President Joe Biden’s Cabinet members, including Vice President Kamala Harris, to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Biden from office.
Schmitt’s call for action follows Biden’s recent suspension of his re-election campaign amid growing concerns about his age and ability to serve another term.
On Monday afternoon, Schmitt sent letters to all members of Biden’s Cabinet, asking them to consider the 25th Amendment after Biden endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee for 2024 and announced he would not seek re-election.
Despite his withdrawal from the campaign, the White House has stated that Biden will complete his current term, which ends on January 20, 2025.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Schmitt emphasized the gravity of his request, stating, “Joe Biden has decided he isn’t capable of being a candidate; in so doing, his admission also means he cannot serve as President.
Therefore, it is in the best immediate interest of the safety of the United States for Joe Biden to resign from office or face removal under the 25th Amendment.”
Schmitt criticized the Biden administration’s handling of various issues, including economic challenges, international relations, and immigration policies.
He argued that if Biden is deemed unfit to run for office, he should also be considered unsuitable to fulfil his presidential duties.
The 25th Amendment allows for the removal of a sitting president if the Vice President and a majority of the Cabinet members declare in writing that the President cannot discharge the powers and duties of the office.
Schmitt’s letters to Cabinet members included a call to work with Harris and submit a formal declaration to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Schmitt’s correspondence highlights his view that the Democratic Party’s internal decisions and endorsements have been driven by elite insiders rather than democratic processes. He urged Cabinet members to act promptly, citing the pressing domestic and international challenges facing the United States.
The White House has yet to respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on Schmitt’s latest move.
Schmitt’s call marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over President Biden’s fitness for office, setting the stage for potential further political developments in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
