Glasgow Couple Pleads Guilty After Baby Tests Positive for Cocaine
A Glasgow couple has pled guilty to causing harm to their infant son after traces of cocaine were found in his system and on two dummies in their home.
The four-week-old baby was rushed to hospital on May 22, 2023, after becoming unwell at a property in Pollokshaws. At the time, he was being cared for by 27-year-old Yasmin Mazur and 29-year-old Connor McBride.
The infant’s condition worsened upon arrival at the hospital, and he was placed in an incubator and on a ventilator. A urine test revealed the baby had cocaine in his system, prompting the hospital to notify the police. A subsequent search of the property uncovered traces of the drug on two dummies found in the kitchen and living room.
Both Mazur and McBride pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Wednesday to causing unnecessary suffering or injury to the baby’s health. McBride also pled guilty to possessing cocaine.
Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness told the court that Mazur had woken up at 4:30 am to find the baby unwell and called for an ambulance. Following the discovery of the cocaine, a police search of the property took place on May 24, revealing traces of the drug on swabs taken from the kitchen, coffee table, and bedside table.
During the investigation, Mazur claimed she “did not know how this happened,” while McBride refused to cooperate without legal advice.
Both defendants, who were arrested and later provided “no comment” interviews, have no prior criminal records. The court heard that there was no long-term harm to the baby.
In their defense, Gemma Elder, representing Mazur, explained that her client had lost her job due to the uncertainty surrounding the case. McBride’s lawyer, Garvey McArdle, noted that his client is now studying to become a drug counselor.
Sheriff Tony Kelly deferred sentencing until next month, pending background reports. He granted both defendants bail but warned that the court was considering custody, stressing, “You both put the child in grave danger.”
