Genie Bouchard Quits X After Controversial Jessica Pegula Post
The fallout from Canadian tennis pro-Genie Bouchard’s recent social media post, “Money can’t buy a US Open final,” continues after her message generated significant buzz.

Some perceived Bouchard’s comment slightly against Jessica Pegula, the daughter of billionaire Bills and Sabres owner Terry Pegula.

A post about Jessica Pegula that was shared by Genie Bouchard stirred buzz this week.

On Tuesday, Bouchard announced she was “leaving” X (formerly Twitter) amid speculation that she had disparaged Pegula. Bouchard clarified her stance in a quote-tweet, explaining, “Literally how? I’m complimenting her. She achieved a Grand Slam final due to hard work, dedication, etc., not because of money.

You can’t buy your way through the US Open draw. She’s amazing. Leaving this app.”

Jessica Pegula, who reached the women’s final at the U.S. Open but fell to Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus with scores of 7-5, 7-5, addressed assumptions about her privileged background during a media session after her Round of 16 win over Russia’s Diana Shnaider.

Pegula, 30, refuted stereotypes that she leads a luxurious lifestyle: “It’s that people think I have a butler, that I get chauffeured around. I have a private limo that I fly private everywhere … I’m not like that.”

With her father’s net worth estimated at $7.7 billion, Pegula’s background has sparked debate. One X user defended Pegula, arguing that she is “a down-to-earth and fun person” who has worked hard to climb the tennis rankings despite coming from a wealthy family. Bouchard shared this post, further elaborating on her stance, stating, “Talent, hard work, discipline, etc.”

Bouchard, who reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 2014 and 2015 and was a Wimbledon finalist in 2014, shifted her focus to pickleball earlier this year.
