Gardaí have seized €1.6 million worth of herbal cannabis and arrested a man in his 40s following the interception of a van in County Wexford.
The seizure was the result of a joint operation conducted by the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and Revenue’s Customs Service.
In a statement issued on Thursday, a Garda spokesperson confirmed the operation took place in Ballycarney, Co Wexford, on 18 July 2025.
“During a search of the van, approximately 80 kilograms of herbal cannabis were discovered, with an estimated street value of €1.6 million,” the spokesperson said.
Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s at the scene. He is currently being held at a Garda station in the east of the country under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.
Under the Act, the man can be detained for up to seven days without charge while investigations continue.
The drugs seized have been sent to Forensic Science Ireland for detailed analysis.
Revenue also issued a statement describing the seizure as part of ongoing efforts to tackle smuggling and shadow economy activity across Ireland.
A spokesperson urged members of the public or business community with information to contact Revenue in confidence via its dedicated hotline at 1800 295 295.
Gardaí confirmed that further investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
