Gardaí Investigate Fatal House Fire at University of Limerick Campus
Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred on the campus grounds of the University of Limerick.
The incident resulted in the death of an older man, believed to be in his late 80s or early 90s, who was reportedly an academic.
The fire broke out at a house in Kilmurry Village shortly before midnight.
Emergency services were alerted at 11:41 PM, prompting the dispatch of four tender units, including a high-rise platform, from Limerick City and Cappamore fire stations.
Firefighters from the Limerick City and County Fire Service battled the blaze for five hours, extinguishing the fire and ensuring the site was safe before returning to their bases after 5 AM.
Gardaí have maintained a presence at the scene and are investigating the fire’s circumstances.
A Garda spokesman confirmed that the scene is preserved pending a technical examination.
“A postmortem examination will be arranged, and the results of this, along with the findings of the technical examination, will determine the course of the Garda investigation,” the spokesman stated.
The University of Limerick has been approached for comment on the tragic incident.
