DUBLIN — Garda have seized a vehicle and issued fines after a learner driver was spotted driving erratically on the southside of the city without a qualified supervisor or L plates, according to Garda Traffic.
The incident was confirmed in a tweet from Garda Traffic, which stated:
“Learner driver spotted driving erratically on the southside. ❌ No qualified driver, no L plates… and now, no car. Fines issued and vehicle seized by Pearse St. Gardaí and Reserve Gardaí.” (GardaTraffic/X)
Breach of road regulations
Investigations by Gardaí revealed that the driver:
- Was not accompanied by a fully licensed supervisor, a legal requirement for learner drivers in Ireland.
- Had no L plates displayed, making it difficult for other road users to identify them as a learner.
- Exhibited erratic driving behaviour, including weaving and inconsistent speed, raising concerns for road safety in the busy southside area.
Immediate enforcement action
As a result, Gardaí took swift action:
- Fines were issued to the driver for multiple traffic violations.
- The vehicle was seized to prevent further risk to the public.
A Garda spokesperson said:
“Driving without proper supervision and failing to display L plates poses a serious risk to both the driver and other road users. This action demonstrates that Gardaí will act decisively to protect road safety.”
Road safety reminder for learner drivers
Gardaí emphasised that learner drivers must always:
- Display L plates clearly on the front and rear of the vehicle.
- Be accompanied by a fully qualified driver at all times.
- Drive safely and obey all traffic rules, including speed limits and lane discipline.
Failure to comply can result in fines, licence penalties, and seizure of the vehicle — as demonstrated in this case.
Public safety and enforcement
The operation, conducted by Pearse Street Gardaí with Reserve Gardaí, underscores ongoing Garda efforts to ensure learner drivers adhere to the law.
Garda Traffic added that such enforcement is part of a wider initiative to reduce accidents and unsafe driving behaviours, particularly among new drivers, who are statistically more likely to be involved in collisions if they flout regulations.
