French Prime Minister Resigns Amid Political Tensions Over Immigration
French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, appointed in May 2022 after Mr Macron’s re-election for a second term.
Ms Borne’s resignation follows recent political tensions over contentious immigration legislation, backed by Mr Macron, to strengthen the government’s ability to deport some foreigners, among other measures.
The President’s office stated that Ms Borne would continue handling daily domestic issues until a new government was appointed. She was France’s second female Prime Minister, and President Macron describes her work as exemplary daily. The President thanked her for implementing their project with stateswomen’s courage, commitment, and determination.
It is unclear who will replace Ms Borne as the new Prime Minister of France. The political tensions over immigration legislation have led to a political crisis in France, and how the new government will tackle this issue remains to be seen remains to be seen. The French President has been pressured to address the immigration issue, and this resignation could be seen as a move to appease the critics.
