France World Cup Winner Raphael Varane Announces Retirement from Football at 31
Raphael Varane, former France international and World Cup winner, has officially announced his retirement from football at the age of 31.
The ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United center-back made the announcement on social media on Tuesday.
Varane had joined Italian club Como for the current season but was left out of their Serie A squad after suffering a knee injury in August. Despite his retirement, Varane will remain involved with Como, albeit in a different role.
“A new life begins off the pitch,” Varane wrote in his announcement. “I will remain with Como, just without using my boots and shin pads.”
The four-time Champions League winner hinted at future plans, saying he looks forward to sharing more details soon.
Varane leaves behind an illustrious career, highlighted by his role in France’s 2018 World Cup victory and his numerous titles with Real Madrid, including four Champions League trophies.
