Democracy faces significant challenges from autocratic regimes, according to former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Speaker Pelosi was recognized with the Fulbright Ireland Public Service Award for her defence of democratic principles at a ceremony held at the US ambassador’s residence in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
The Fulbright Commission is a bilateral program between the US State Department and Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs. Its mission is to promote democracy and foster international cooperation.
During her visit, Pelosi also met with President Michael D Higgins, discussing pressing issues such as China’s influence, climate change, and the conflict in Ukraine.
She emphasized the ongoing global competition between autocracy and democracy, warning of the need to confront authoritarian challenges.
Pelosi expressed concerns over Russia’s use of “brutal force” and China’s strategic economic efforts to undermine democratic values. She stressed the importance of safeguarding free and fair elections and the independence of the judiciary in the face of growing threats.
In a candid conversation with US Ambassador to Ireland Claire Cronin, Pelosi reflected on her extensive political career and interactions with past presidents. Pelosi provided insights into bipartisan dynamics and foreign policy challenges, from her positive relationship with George HW Bush to her criticisms of George W Bush’s handling of the Iraq War.
While praising Bill Clinton’s presidency, Pelosi acknowledged his shortcomings regarding China. She reiterated her commitment to bipartisanship, citing Ronald Reagan’s emphasis on America’s openness to global talent as a cornerstone of its leadership role.
Pelosi commended Barack Obama’s policy achievements, particularly in healthcare, while refraining from directly mentioning her political rival, Donald Trump.
She expressed confidence in President Joe Biden’s leadership, citing his experience and clear vision for the country, predicting his re-election.
As democracy faces mounting threats worldwide, Pelosi’s remarks underscore the importance of international cooperation and vigilance in defending democratic institutions against autocratic encroachment.
