Former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney has declared he will vote for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 U.S. elections, aligning himself with his daughter, Liz Cheney, who made a similar endorsement earlier this week.

The announcement comes as Harris and former President Donald Trump face a closely contested race, with a high-stakes debate scheduled for next week.

Dick Cheney, who served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, has been a controversial figure due to his role in the planning of U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. These conflicts, which resulted in significant civilian casualties and human rights abuses, have drawn substantial criticism from human rights organizations.

Liz Cheney, the former vice president’s daughter and a former Republican congresswoman, has been an outspoken critic of Trump, particularly regarding the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

In his statement, Dick Cheney described Trump as the greatest threat to the republic in its 248-year history. He emphasized his commitment to putting the country above partisan politics and pledged his support for Kamala Harris. “As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our Constitution,” Cheney said.

The Harris campaign welcomed the Cheneys’ support, framing it as part of a “growing movement of Republicans putting country over party.”

In response, Trump dismissed the Cheneys’ endorsements, referring to them as “irrelevant RINO” (Republicans in Name Only) on social media, a term he uses to describe Republicans who are not aligned with his views.
