Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82, his former spokesperson confirmed on Saturday.
Garba Shehu, who served as Buhari’s senior special assistant on media and publicity during his presidency, said the late leader passed away in a London hospital, though specific details surrounding his death were not disclosed.
Buhari, a retired army general, first ruled Nigeria as a military leader from 1983 to 1985 before being ousted in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida. He later returned to power through democratic means, winning elections in 2015 and serving two terms as civilian president until 2023.
His death comes just two years after he stepped down from office following the conclusion of his constitutionally permitted two terms.
According to Islamic tradition, the former president will be buried in line with Muslim rites. Senior political figures, dignitaries and former colleagues are expected to pay their respects to his family in the coming days.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.
The federal government is expected to announce a period of national mourning and may organise a state funeral to honour Buhari’s legacy.
During his time in office, Buhari was known for his anti-corruption campaign, infrastructural development agenda, and efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s military against insurgent threats.
While his leadership style remained divisive, supporters hailed him as a disciplined and principled figure, while critics pointed to economic challenges and concerns about civil liberties during his tenure.
Further details on funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected in the coming hours.
