A 66-year-old former Irish soldier stood before Tralee District Court on Wednesday afternoon, facing charges of murdering 84-year-old Paddy O’Mahony in his Castlemaine, Co Kerry home over the weekend.
Thomas Carroll, residing in Brookway, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, was accused of the murder of Patrick O’Mahony at Ballyraemeen, Castlemaine, on February 24.
Detective Sergeant Mark O’Sullivan from Tralee gardaí testified to arresting and charging Mr Carroll at noon on New Road, Tralee. Mr Carroll did not respond to the charge, as confirmed by Det O’Sullivan.
Pat Mann, representing Mr Carroll, raised no objections during this phase.
Sergeant Chris Manton, representing the prosecution, requested remanding Mr Carroll in custody at Cork Prison until the video link appearance scheduled for March 6 at Tralee District Court.
Mr Mann applied for legal aid on behalf of his client, submitting a statement of financial means to the court.
Furthermore, Mr Mann requested that Mr Carroll continue to have access to medication. Judge John King ordered the director of Cork Prison to ensure Mr Carroll received all prescribed medication and necessary medical care.
Judge King approved the legal aid request.
Mr Mann acknowledged that the District Court couldn’t grant bail, as it was within the jurisdiction of the High Court. He stated that a bail application was in progress.
Judge King remanded Mr Carroll in custody until the video link appearance on March 6 at Tralee District Court.
