Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, who served under President George W. Bush, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in an op-ed for Politico, declaring Donald Trump as “perhaps the most serious threat to the rule of law in a generation.”
Gonzalez, breaking ranks with his Republican party, cited concerns over Trump’s potential return to the White House as a key reason for supporting Harris.
Gonzalez highlighted the significance of presidential integrity and respect for institutions as crucial checks on executive power. He criticised Trump for undermining the rule of law and said he could no longer remain silent as Trump pursued another presidential bid. Gonzalez praised Harris for her experience as a former prosecutor and attorney general, expressing hope that she would respect the balance of power among the branches of government.
While acknowledging some policy disagreements with Harris, Gonzalez defended her against criticism for unpopular Biden administration decisions, particularly in economic and border policies. He emphasised that vice presidents have limited influence on such matters, with the ultimate decision-making power resting with the president.
Gonzalez also rebuked Republicans for failing to hold Biden accountable for executive power abuses, contrasting this with Harris’ commitment to the law.
He concluded by condemning Trump’s actions during the January 6 Capitol riots, accusing him of failing to fulfil his presidential duties to protect Congress and law enforcement.
