American Idol alum Mandisa passed away on Thursday at 47, as confirmed by Christian rock radio station K-Love.
The Grammy-winning singer, renowned for her anthem “Overcomer,” breathed her last at her Nashville residence. The specific cause of her demise remains undisclosed.
Originally hailing from California, Mandisa rose to fame during her stint on Season 5 of American Idol in 2006.
She notably countered judge Simon Cowell’s critiques with grace. Earning a spot in the show’s Top 10, she launched her debut album “True Beauty” in 2007.
Mandisa’s vibrant tracks like “Stronger,” “Good Morning,” and “My Deliverer” became staples on Christian radio.
In her memoir, “Out of the Dark,” released in 2022, Mandisa candidly recounted her harrowing teenage experience of assault and her subsequent battles with mental health, including thoughts of suicide.
Supported by friends who intervened and advocated for therapy alongside prayer, Mandisa underscored the importance of seeking assistance and normalising discussions on mental well-being.
David Pierce, K-Love’s chief media officer, expressed sorrow over Mandisa’s passing while recognizing her journey and influence.
He highlighted the end of Mandisa’s struggles and her reunion with the deity she sang about. The statement concluded with heartfelt prayers for Mandisa’s loved ones.
