Fine Gael Deputy Leader Heather Humphreys Announces She Won’t Seek Re-Election, Citing Health and Energy Concerns
Fine Gael Deputy Leader Heather Humphreys has announced that she will not contest the upcoming general election, citing personal reasons and declining energy levels.
In a statement to RTÉ News, the long-serving TD expressed that her decision came after “careful consideration” and reflects the toll of public service.
“Politicians are human too, we give all we can for as long as we can, but time catches up on us all,” Humphreys said. “As I get older, my health and energy levels are not what they were, and I know going forward that I would not be able to give the job the time and commitment it deserves.”
Her unexpected announcement comes as a surprise to many, particularly given her prominent role in the party.
Humphreys’ departure brings the total number of Fine Gael TDs leaving politics to 18, out of the 35 elected in 2020.
First elected in 2011, Humphreys has been a member of the Cabinet for the past decade and currently serves as Minister for Social Protection.
The Cavan-Monaghan TD was widely expected to top the poll in her constituency in the upcoming election, which is just weeks away.
Humphreys has been a strong advocate for rural issues throughout her time in government and was seen by many colleagues as one of the party’s key electoral figures. Known for her straightforward approach, she was promoted to deputy leader by Simon Harris earlier this year.
Those close to her in the local constituency organisation confirmed that her decision stems from a belief that she no longer has the energy to commit to another five years in politics.
